You may be wondering how many calories takeaways and fast food have. The calories we consume in food are units of energy that create warmth in our bodies. If something you eat contains 200 calories it’s a measure of how much energy your body will obtain from consuming it. Fast foods such as burgers and chips calories are inexplicable. Salads such as chicken salad have calories at lower amounts and are a healthier option.
To achieve weight loss it really comes down to consuming fewer calories than your body is using. Yet, why is something that sounds like such a simple formula, often so difficult to achieve?
Your maximum daily calorie intake should be 2,500 calories if you’re male and 2,000 if you are female. We know that research shows what a big part our quantity of calorie intake plays in weight management and metabolism (the chemical processes in our body that convert food into energy).
But are all calories created equal? By definition, yes but in reality absolutely not.
Research shows that our bodies metabolise calories from different foods in different ways. The type of calories you consume will determine how your body digests it and stores that energy. Case in point, a chocolate bar full of sugar and fat will not offer you the same quality of energy that a piece of lean protein will. It will make your blood sugar spike and dip, whereas a piece of chicken will keep you fuller for longer and help build muscle.
The body needs seven main nutrients to stay healthy and build itself up.
Getting takeaway and eating out is a treat. People often use it as an excuse to overindulge but that doesn’t have to be the case. In most places, you can look for a healthy option or make a few changes or substitutes to your order to cut calories.
A recent study showed that the average quarter-pounder burger has calories with toppings and a portion of chips with a soft drink included has additional calories up to 1,500. That’s very close to the recommended daily calorie intake for both men and women.
The amount of calories in takeaway burgers and chips varies. This depends on where you’re ordering from but a vegan burger and chips usually come in at 900 calories.
This very much depends on how the dressing and the ingredients are placed in the salad, so the calories in chicken salad vary. There is a broad spectrum of low to high-calorie chicken salads depending on what’s in it. The average chicken salad with dressing or sauce comes in at 570 calories.
A portion of stir-fried vegetable noodles usually comes in at around 300 to 400 calories approximately. This depends on portion size and other factors.
There are lots of big and small ways you can reduce calories in your diet, how many calories we consume even on takeaway night. It’s about the choices you make. Whether that’s where you’re ordering from or what you’re choosing to order, you can make a few swaps or substitutes and still treat yourself. It could be as simple a start as swapping out a sugary, fizzy drink for some water instead. Or choosing salads that have lower fat dressings.
For instance, a Caesar salad has deep-fried croutons, a creamy cheese dressing and lots of parmesan. You could choose a salad with less cheese and a more simple vinaigrette if you want a lower calorie option. Or ask for dressing on the side so you can control how much of it you use.
Always look for ways to up your vegetable intake when you’re ordering a takeaway. You can also swap out those chips for steamed rice. There are so many ways we can treat ourselves and still make healthier choices. At the end of the day, it is up to us on how many calories we consume.
Every little choice counts.
